Come and see why Marrakech’s bustling medina and lively bazaars ensure the city is regularly featured in people’s ultimate bucket lists of must-see places to visit.
After your arrival at Marrakech, you’ll go directly to Ouarzazate. The city is located at the crossroads of three valleys and sits on the doorstep of the Sahara. You’ll benefit from this time to absorb your surroundings and let out the stress of life.
Today, you’ll gain a fascinating insight into the lives of Ouarzazate's Kasbah residents past by exploring the fortress. And then, you’ll prepare for the camel trek by purchasing a piece of kit considered vital by the discerning desert adventurer; a scarf traditionally wrapped around one's head to provide protection from both sun and sand. You’ll head out across the Tizi n'Tinififft mountain; tonight's base will be the village of Tazzarine. It is situated on the desert's edge and just a few miles from the Draa Valley; this oasis post boasts a rich cultural heritage thanks to its location along ancient caravan routes.
After breakfast, you’ll meet with the cameleers group nearby Iferd where you’ll load up the camels for the second day trek into the heart of the desert. After a few hours and before anyone can get the hump, you’ll arrive at the first stopping post to set up your camp, and watch the sun set across the Saharan dune while dining amongst the stars. The following morning, you’ll walk off breakfast while taking in the incredible views offered from this desert hideaway. You’ll take your time to appreciate how much easier it is to cross the terrain on four hooves rather than two feet , and then you’ll aboard your camel and head to the Atlas Mountains before driving to Tazzarine to spend the night.
After breakfast, you’ll explore the charms of this picturesque World Heritage Site. You’ll take a significant stop along the trading route in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. the Kasbah at Ait Benhaddou remains one of Morocco's best preserved examples of fortified architecture while the surrounding villages are equally ripe for exploring. With the Kasbah perhaps most famous for having been featured in the epic Lawrence of Arabia starring Peter O'Toole, movie buffs may like to consider taking a trip to the nearby studios where other cinematic classics such as Gladiator, Alexander the Great, the Living Daylights and Jewel of the Nile were filmed. For budding actors and actresses, why not re-enact some scenes from the film.
You’ll spend the last days being hypnotized by the city's countless charms. After negotiating the winding streets and carnival atmosphere of the main square, you’ll find plenty of time to explore the souks further in search of the perfect souvenir. You’ll find yourself entertained by the snake charmers and jugglers, and then in the evening you’ll join the locals to sample the delicious looking fare from the food stalls of Djemaa el-Fna Square.
On the first morning you will visit Ait Benhaddou. You will have the chance to explore some of the ruined buildings, and climb to the top of the hill where you’ll contemplate spectacular views down over the village and the surrounding countryside. You may also enter one of the houses and share a glass of mint tea with some of the residents to gain a better understanding of how they live their lives. In the afternoon you'll drive north across the High Atlas mountains. The road, completed by the Foreign Legion in 1936, winds up over the Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2260m) and offers stunning views of the mountains before descending past Berber villages to the plain surrounding Marrakech.
Optional: Share a glass of mind tea with a local family
After breakfast, you’ll go for a sightseeing tour in the center of Marrakech, which leads to the main sights. Afterwards, you’ll make your way into the sprawling souk, where you’ll notice that individual trades and crafts are concentrated in one street or area, so the shoemakers are all next to each other, as are the jewellers, the potters, and weavers etc. The Djemaa el-Fna square provides the throbbing atmosphere of a medieval fair; it always seems full of life and continues late into the night. In this great open square at the heart of the medina, snake charmers and jugglers are among those who vie to entertain you. In the evening wonderful smells waft by as food stalls cook up their local delicacies. In the afternoon you’ll have time to wander and make your own discoveries. Eventually, you’ll be taken to your place of stay for dinner and accommodation.
Optional: Chez Ali Fantasia dinner show
After breakfast, according to your flight departure schedule, you’ll slightly prepare your luggage full of joyful memories and head to the airport.
