Nature & Culture Escape Through The Valley of Ait Bougmez

Beautifully nicknamed the Happy Valley, in the Berber land of the High Atlas, this trail between traces of dinosaurs, rock carvings, fortified tighermt, collective granary, grain mills, fields and gardens is a real delight.

DAY 1 CASABLANCA

Upon arrival in Casablanca, the economic capital of Morocco, you will be met and transferred by our car to your place of stay. Depending on arrival time, you will visit the city, including an optional visit to the Hassan II, one of the world’s biggest mosques. You’ll eventually stay and have dinner at your hotel.

DAY 2 CASABLANCA/AIT BOUGMEZ (353km)

After breakfast, you’ll prepare for an early departure from Casablanca. During your way, you’ll catch a lunch break at the edge of Bin el Ouidane Lake. And then, you’ll continue to Azilal. After 86km of driving, you’ll arrive at your hostel where you’ll have dinner and discuss your program with an official mountain guide.

DAY 3 FIRST HIKE

After breakfast, you’ll start your journey by walking one hour from Agouti. You’ll discover a fortified building built of juniper wood and earth. It shelters the tomb of the Marabout Sidi Moussa, a saint venerated for his gifts of healing and his powers of interpretation of the dreams. This sacred place also served as a collective granary for storing and preserving crops. Inside, there are lodges in which the villagers sheltered their valuables and jewels. From the terrace, the exceptional panoramic view offers an astonishing contrast between this green oasis and the Desert Mountains, which leads to the village of Tabante. Then Ait Imi, Ibaqalliwne and Geopark M'Goun which received the world label of UNESCO in 2014. The Geopark is committed to preserving the heritage and contributing to the protection of the natural and cultural specificities of the region. More than a million years ago (Lower Jurassic), the Aït Bouguemez Valley was a lake populated by impressive dinosaurs that left enormous footprints up to 60cm in diameter. Pyramidal hills of about 150m above sea level give a particular aspect to the valley. Following your picnic break at Akourbi, you’ll go back to your place of stay for dinner and accommodation.

DAY 4 DEPARTURE FOR OUR SECOND HIKE IN THE UPPER AIT BOUWLI VALLEY

After breakfast, you’ll prepare for your second hike in the upper Ait Bouwli Valley. You’ll enjoy a tea break, while admiring Tizi 'n Tighiste mountain prehistoric site of rocks engravings. And then, you’ll walk and visit Ait Mzalte village, then Iwraghne, Tazolte and Igourranne and weaving cooperative. Afterwards, you may visit the Anghar family home in Abashkou village for a traditional couscous. Eventually, you’ll be taken to you place of stay, and enjoy the rest of the night with an entertaining musical evening in Bou Oughanine.

DAY 5 CASABLANCA

After breakfast, you’ll hit the road to Casablanca via Azilal. Following your lunch break by Bin el Ouidane lack, you’ll continue your way and arrive finally to Casablanca for dinner and accommodation.

DAY 6 DEPARTURE

After breakfast, according to your flight departure schedule, you’ll slightly prepare your luggage full of joyful memories and head to Mohamed V airport.
